What is Email Validation?
Email validation is the process of identifying if an email address is active and legitimate. This helps to reduce the bounce rate and improve delivery.
How does it work?
Our system performs a number of checks automatically, mostly involving verifying the validity of an address by looking at the address syntax and the DNS entries of the address.
How to get started in validating your email list?
To validate your email list using Enginemailer, follow these steps:
- Login to your Enginemailer account
- Navigate to the Subscribers tab and click “Email Validation” in the drop-down menu
- Click the Create “New button” on the top right
- Give your list a name
- Choose the contacts that you would like to validate. You have 2 options to choose from:
- Option 1: Select all active subscribers
- Option 2: Select subscribers by category
- Proceed to make the required payment based on the size of your subscriber list
- Once the payment is completed, your email list will undergo the verification process
- After the verification is done, you will see an overview of the results of your verification in a simplified dashboard and a further breakdown of each category.
- You can choose to download the CSV file if needed.
How to identify validated emails, bad emails, and non-validated emails in your Subscriber list?
Go to the Subscribers tab and click "Manage" in the drop-down menu:
- Validated Emails: You will see a green tick mark icon next to their email addresses. This icon signifies that the emails have been validated and confirmed as valid during the verification process.
- Bad Emails: All bad emails will be moved to the Inactive state. You will see a red exclamation mark icon next to their email addresses. This icon indicates that the emails have been identified as bad during the validation process.
Note: Subscribers without any special indicator next to their email addresses refer to emails that have not gone through the validation process.
What do the different types of email validation categories mean?
Refer to the Result Summary of your Enginemailer account for an overview of the breakdown between valid and bad emails in your validated email list.
Categories | Explanation |
Total Records | The total number of email addresses submitted for validation. |
Valid | Email addresses that pass all the validation checks and are confirmed to be active and legitimate to email. |
Invalid | Invalid email addresses refer to those that fail one or more validation checks, including incorrect formatting (such as missing the "@" symbol or having invalid characters) and mailbox not found (when the associated mailbox does not exist or cannot receive emails). |
Abuse | Email addresses associated with abusive or suspicious activities, often used for spamming or fraudulent purposes. |
Spamtrap | Spam traps are email addresses specifically designed to identify and capture unsolicited or spam emails, and you should not email them. They serve as a spam prevention method aimed to lure in spammers and subsequently block their activities. |
Catch-all | Email addresses that accept emails for any username at a particular domain, regardless of whether the recipient exists or not. For instance, let's say you have a catch-all email address set up for the domain "example.com". If you send an email to "randomname@example.com" or "madeupname@example.com", even if there is no actual person with those email addresses, the catch-all address will collect those emails. |
Do not mail | These are company emails, role-based, or simply addresses you should avoid emailing. Examine this file and determine if you want to email these addresses. |
Unknown | Email addresses for which a definitive validation result could not be determined due to various factors including an offline mail server or an anti-spam email system. |
