What is email open tracking?
Open tracking in emails allows you as the sender to determine whether your emails have been opened by your subscribers. It provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of your email campaigns.
How does it work?
Email open tracking operates by incorporating an invisible image known as a pixel into your email before it is sent. When your subscriber opens the email, the images contained in the email, including the tracking pixel, are downloaded. This enables the tracking tool to know the moment your email is opened by monitoring the download activity of the hidden image.

Are there instances where it doesn’t work?
There are a couple of scenarios where email tracking may not work as expected:
- Certain versions of emails: For instance, some versions of Outlook may not automatically download images embedded in emails.
- Subscriber disabled image auto-download: Subscribers have intentionally disabled automatic image downloads in their email settings.
As email tracking depends on the pixel being downloaded, the absence of image downloads would lead to the tracking tool not being able to track the email when it has been opened.
While email open tracking is generally effective, it's important to note that it may not always provide 100% accuracy due to these limitations.
